The idea of starting a Tamil magazine was conceived in the year 2001 during a discussion between Mr.P.Chandrasekaran(Kallal) and Mr.RM.Venkatachalam(karaikudi) and Mr.Chandrasekaran offered to be the Editor for the magazine.

 

When the same was announced in one of the meetings of the Dubai Nagarathars in 2002 by Mr.Venkatachalam when he was president, it received an overwhelming response from the members. Mr.AL.Murugappan(Devakottai) amd Mr.RM.Narayanan instantly offered their services to be joiny-editors with Mr.P.Chandrasekaran to bring out the magazine a success.

 

On a suba yoga suba dinam, the magazine was named as VAANAM, short form of VAlaikuda NAgarathar Malar. All the Nagarathars living in UAE were invited to use VAANAM as a platform to thrivr on their writing skills.

 

The first issue was released as a full blown printed copy on 4th November 2002, (18th day of Ippasi month Chitrabanu year), the Deepawali day of the year 2002 at Mr.Venkatachalam's residence at Dubai. He received the frst copy of VAANAM. Since then many DUNAGS members are writing in the magazine regularly. Nagarathars from neighboring Gulf countries, India, Far eastern countries, Europe and USA are also sending many useful information and various articels which are regularly published in VAANAM.

 

VAANAM is in its 9th year now and is carrying many sections such as articles on various subjects, poems, short and long stories, receipe, drawings, tit bits, advisories, health page, cross word puzzles, children stories, riddles etc..

 

Many have sponsored various issues of VAANAM and continuing their assistance to cover the cost of printing. One of the regular sponsors is Mr.AN.Chockalingam(Devakottai). VAANAM is distributed to our DUNAGS members in every meeting and we have made it available in the web too.
